Ohio Lake Erie Fishing Guide License

Under Ohio Revised Code 1533.51, no person shall be or serve as a fishing guide in the Lake Erie fishing district without a license from the Division of Wildlife. The Lake Erie fishing district is defined in ORC 1533.02. Fishing guide licenses expire on April 15. First-time fishing guide license applicants who apply prior to March 1 will be issued licenses that expire on April 15, immediately following their application date. Renewal applications cannot be processed prior to March 17. There is a license fee of $50 per year. Proof of valid U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) license is required prior to the issuance of a Lake Erie Fishing Guide license. The USCG license must be maintained while operating as a fishing guide.

ICE GUIDE ONLY: If you are only applying for an ice fishing guide license, the boat and USCG information is not required; unless you are using an airboat. If you are using an airboat to transport people to/from your ice shanties, a USCG license will be required. Either way, you will need to know the number of ice shanties and the general area of use.
