Ohio’s Clean Marinas and Clean Boater Programs

The Ohio Clean Marinas program was established in 2004 as a proactive partnership between ODNR and the Ohio Sea Grant College Program. Its mission is to encourage marinas and boaters to use simple, innovative solutions to keep Ohio's coastal and inland waterway resources clean. The program assists these operators in protecting the resources that provide their livelihood — clean water and fresh air.

The basic goal of the program is environmental stewardship - making marinas and boaters more aware of environmental laws, rules and jurisdictions, and encouraging marinas to follow best management practices and receive Clean Marinas certification.
In 2015, the program was expanded from an initial focus on marinas in the Lake Erie watershed to the entire State of Ohio. In 2018, a tiered certification status was established, and certified marinas are now eligible to seek Gold and Platinum status.
