Private consulting foresters are professional foresters who work for themselves or a company and provide forestry services to landowners for a fee. Common services they provide include: timber sale setup and oversight, management plan writing, timber basis for tax purposes, and sometimes woodland improvement work.
These non-profit organizations listed below maintain regularly updated listings of foresters available to provide consultant services to private woodland owners. Both organizations require that the professional foresters listed maintain a base level of formal forestry education and that a code of professional ethics be listed. A professional forester's membership in either of these two organizations is voluntary. Some professional foresters choose not to participate in either organization. This does not necessarily indicate a lack of training, skill, or experience on their part.
