Shooting Range

Rifle/Pistol, Shotgun, & Archery A, C, D  


Deer Creek Shooting Range lies in a flood plain and is prone to flooding during a heavy rain. As the water in this area takes much longer to recede than to rise, the closures often last several days. Please call the range office 740-412-3420 or 1-800-WILDLIFE before traveling to this range after a heavy rain to ensure it is open. Be sure to follow Ohio Division of Wildlife on social media for updates.

To Shoot At This Range You Must Bring:

  • Valid range permit. Permits cannot be purchased on site.
  • Target and target stand/holder. Deer Creek Shooting Range does not provide targets or target stands. Self-healing reactionary polymer targets and paper targets are allowed. No steel targets allowed. 
  • Target stand/holder. Permissible target stands: store bought stands, road side advertising/election signs, cardboard boxes, and wood framed stands. Target backer must be cardboard, corrugated sign material, or paper.

Range Features

  • 50 foot, 50 yard, and 100 yard rifle and pistol ranges.
  • 10 concrete shooting benches, one prone position, and 7 pistol positions. All benches are under shelter and have handicap shooting stations and walkways.
  • An unsupervised shotgun range with handicap accessible shooting stations and walkways.
  • A static archery range with 6 targets from 10 to 35 yards.
  • A walk-through archery course with 13 targets.
  • A broadhead archery pit. Archer must bring their own target.

Hours of Operation

  • The pistol, rifle, and shotgun ranges are open March 1- Dec. 31, Wed.- Sun. 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Shooting ceases at 4:40 pm.
  • Closed: New Year’s Day, Easter, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day.
  • The archery range is open sunrise to sunset, seven days a week..

  • Rifle, pistol, and shotgun ranges: All persons age 18 and older shooting must purchase either an annual shooting range permit ($24), an annual permit and hunting license combo ($29.12), or a one-day shooting range permit ($5), which are available at all hunting and fishing license outlets, online, or the HuntFish OH mobile app. Permits are not sold at the shooting range.
  • Shooters age 17 and under are not required to purchase a permit but must be accompanied by and directly monitored by an adult (age 18 years or older) holding a valid shooting range permit

Target Range Rules

BEFORE entering the range you must read and be familiar with all range rules.
Failure to follow range rules or unsafe behavior may result in shooters being ejected from range, forfeiture of permit, and subject to arrest.

  • All shooters (18 and older) must present a range use permit to the range attendant and sign in before entering the range. Shooters 17 and under must be accompanied by an adult who holds a valid range use permit.
  • Eye and hearing protection are strongly recommended.
  • Limit of two shooters per shooting bench.
  • Paper or a stationary reactive self-healing polymer targets only. Shooters must provide their own target and target holders. Only clay targets may be used on trap and skeet ranges.
  • All targets must be placed at base of bullet stop. Do not climb bullet stop to place targets.
  • Use of tracer ammo or exploding targets is prohibited.
  • Illegal firearms as defined by O.R.C. Section 2923.11 are prohibited.
  • Shooting fully automatic firearms or using a device that simulates fully automatic firing is prohibited.
  • Rapid fire and firing from the hip is prohibited.
  • Use of centerfire rifles at the 50 foot range is limited to sight-in purposes only (5-10 shots) at the discretion of the range supervisor. 
  • During a cease fire, all firearms shall be unloaded, placed on a bench with actions open, and may not be handled. Do not go down range until all shooters are behind the yellow line and all shooters have acknowledged the cease fire by announcing “clear”.
  • When going to and from targets, use the central pathway. Do not cross or go around cable.
  • When returning to the bench, do not handle firearms until everyone is behind the yellow line and all shooters have acknowledged “ready on the line”.
  • All target material must be removed from the range before you leave.
  • Shooters must pick up their empty shotgun shells at the shotgun range and dispose of them properly.
  • Do not place unfired rounds in barrels.
  • All shooters must sign out when they leave.

A = Supervised Rifle and Pistol Target Range
B = Unsupervised Rifle and Pistol Target Range
C = Unsupervised Clay Target Shotgun Range
D = Unsupervised Archery Target Range
O = Other Public Ranges; not classified by the Division of Wildlife

Class A, B, and C Rifle, Pistol, and Shotgun Ranges

  • All persons age 18 and older shooting on ODNR Division of Wildlife Class A, B, and C ranges must purchase a Shooting Range Permit which is available at all hunting & fishing license outlets. Permits are not sold at the shooting ranges. These permits partially offset the cost of operations, maintenance, trash removal, and improvements.
  • Shooters age 17 and under are not required to purchase a permit, but must be accompanied by and directly monitored by an adult (age 18 years or older) holding a valid Shooting Range Permit.
  • Legal targets on all shooting ranges are single sheet paper targets, or stationary reactive or self healing polymer targets only. Shooters must supply their own target holders, which must meet the approval of the shooting range attendant. Grand River and Spring Valley supply target holders. The shooting of fully automatic firearms, and rapid fire of semi-automatic firearms are strictly prohibited.
  • All Class A ranges have handicap accessible parking, shooting benches and restroom facilities

Permit Fees

Annual Shooting Range Permit 

  • Allows the holder to be admitted to Division of Wildlife Class-A, B, and C shooting ranges for one year

  • Allows the holder to be admitted to Division of Wildlife Class-A, B, and C shooting ranges for one day

Shooting Range Permit year begins March 1 and ends the last day of February. All costs include a $1.00 writing fee. All sales are final. No refunds are given.

Class D Archery Ranges

These Ranges are open free-of-charge. No permit is required to use these ranges, and no range attendant or restroom facilities are provided.
