Primitive Camping
Primitive Camping at Jesse Owens State Park

Primitive Camping

A variety of primitive campsites and primitive group areas are available at State Forests and State Parks across Ohio.

Primitive Campgrounds

Campers who love "roughing it" or combining hiking with camping have a variety of primitive camping options available to them. Ohio State Parks offer campgrounds with primitive group camping areas as well as individual primitive camp sites. See Bridle Camps for primitive camping areas specifically designed for equestrian use.

Backpack Camping

A number of public areas feature hike-in or drive in primitive campsites. Burr Oak, East Fork and Tar Hollow state parks along with Shawnee State Forest and Zaleski State Forest offer lengthy backpacking trails with primitive campsites that accommodate tent camping. There is a 10-person limit at backpack campsites and reservations are not required or accepted. Latrines, water (weather permitting) and primitive campsites are indicated on backpacking trail maps.
