Urban Forestry

Urban Foresters are employed by the Ohio Division of Forestry to provide community officials and allied agencies with the organizational and technical assistance to effectively manage trees and the land on which they grow to meet the community’s local needs.

Urban Foresters provide

  • Direct, one-on-one technical and organizational assistance about community forest management, tree commission formation, developing local tree laws, and best management practices. We feel that the best way to help you is in your community where your trees are.
  • An urban forestry grant program funded by federal, state, and/or private sector monies when available. Our grants are based on community commitment rather than community need. These are reimbursable grants requiring a 50/50 match, used to promote comprehensive tree care programs.
  • Information to help communities successfully implement their urban forest management programs. Activities include annual regional conferences, an interactive website, Tree Commission Academy, field days, and much more.
  • Updates and assistance targeting urban forest threats and pressures. We strive to identify and help mitigate potential risk to Ohio's urban forests. By partnering with federal and state agencies, we help communities prepare for, avoid, or deal with factors that would adversely affect their urban forest resource.

Urban Foresters are professional foresters, but they work for Ohio DNR. You can also contact private, professional urban forestry consultants to assist you with managing urban forests.
