Ohio's State Wildlife Action Plan (SWAP)

Ohio's State Wildlife Action Plan (SWAP)

Funding for species with unmet conservation needs

Ohio’s 2015-2025 State Wildlife Action Plan is a tool to secure conservation funding for critical habitats and species of greatest conservation need in Ohio. This funding is available through the State Wildlife Grants (SWG) Program, which was created by Congress to provide for the management of species with unmet or under-funded conservation needs. To be eligible for SWG funding, states must have a federally-approved State Wildlife Action Plan in place. Ohio’s original 10-year Action Plan was created in 2005. The Division of Wildlife, in cooperation with our conservation partners throughout the state, revised the plan for 2015-2025.

A unifying force for conservation

Ohio’s State Wildlife Action Plan is a strategic look at the integrated conservation efforts needed to sustain the broad array of wildlife species across the state. The Action Plan is not intended to be a work plan for the Division of Wildlife or any other conservation organization - it is meant to support, complement, and unite the work of multiple conservation and management entities within Ohio. The Action Plan is designed to build upon, coordinate, and focus these efforts – as well as identify information gaps and further needs – to create a comprehensive vision for future conservation activities across the state.

In a nutshell, Ohio’s State Wildlife Action Plan is the vehicle to bring together all Ohioans with an interest in conservation, and help prioritize and direct conservation efforts for habitats and species so that they are as scientifically effective and financially efficient as possible.

Financial support provided by the State Wildlife Grants Program will enable coordination and implementation of many projects through Ohio’s State Wildlife Action Plan. The Action Plan is an adaptive plan that will continually be updated, revised, and improved based on the input of all those interested in wildlife conservation. Working together, Ohioans can shape a future that is filled with abundant wildlife resources that define the state and provide for the enjoyment, recreation, and livelihood of its citizens and visitors.
